Maine Endwell High School Creates Habitat Club |
Young people can
make a real difference! M-E High has raised over $1500 and put hours
of sweat equity into our homes.
Young people respond with their hearts to Habitat for Humanity’s
mission to eliminate poverty housing. They understand instinctively
the dignity in the concept of offering “a hand up, not handout.”
Generally, volunteers must be at least 18 years old to work on a building site; however, there are numerous other ways young people can get involved. Did you know we have lesson plans provided by Habitat to integrate into other curriculum materials and group activities? Teachers will find it easy to create lessons that address important elements of the NYS standards in English Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Technology! Broome County Habitat for Humanity can enable teachers and youth group leaders to deepen their understanding of Habitat and explore ways to integrate Habitat’s lessons with other curriculum materials. What a learning experience, especially when students get the opportunity to work on site and meet our families and volunteers. Interested in forming a Habitat Club in your school? Nine
fundraisers raise $2000
Flood relief project
Social activist Patch Adams Oct. 20 and 21st |
The Binghamton University campus chapter has been busy this year coordinating 9 fundraisers which raised $2000. The last fundraiser of the semester was held on April 22nd. This year we expanded our annual 5k walk/run to include a wiffle ball tournament. The new event was cosponsored with AXP fraternity, and raised $900. Some members from AXP have also participated in a build on April 21st .One of our most rewarding experiences this year was the Collegiate Challenge Spring Break Trip to Hilton Head Habitat for Humanity. A group of 21 eager volunteers spent their Spring Break building homes in Bluffton County South Carolina. We volunteered on six homes which were the last of a community built by the affiliate in the past five years. Students have also continued attending build days and flood relief projects. Members have been working with Conklin Presbyterian Church to alleviate the burdens of rebuilding after devastation. This project has allowed the campus chapter to expand our influence in the community, and continue to the goal of eliminating poverty housing. As a special endeavor, this fall the Chapter will be raising funds to help with a community building project in Costa Rica. We will be hosting social activist Patch Adams on Oct. 20 and 21st! Please watch local media for details as they unfold. Christina Gallus, Co-President BU Campus Chapter
