Construction FAQ

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Broome County Habitat for Humanity! We work year-round, rehabilitating old and building new homes in partnership with low-income families who then buy these homes with an interest free mortgage. We depend on you, the volunteer, to help us with a wide variety of tasks to make our non-profit organization a success!

Construction Site Workday

We work Wednesdays and Saturdays on our sites from 8:30 am to between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. If you would like to work on our worksite, either as an individual, or with a church, school, or work group, please call our office to schedule a work day, 772-0809

What should I wear?

Always wear sturdy shoes. Hiking shoes, boots or sneakers. Wear layers of clothing to prepare for indoor or outdoor work (things you are willing to get dirty!).

What should I bring?

You need to bring work gloves and protective eyewear if you have them.  Also, be sure to bring a lunch (or plan to take a break at a nearby restaurant) and a water bottle.  (If you have a work belt and basic tools, you are welcome to bring them, however Habitat is not responsible if they are lost or damaged.)

What happens on the workday?

Habitat task is very important to our organization and we are grateful for your help. Each morning, upon arrival, there will be a short orientation and overview of the day, after which you will be introduced to your site supervisor, who will assign tasks. You will never be asked to do a task you are not comfortable with. We break for lunch about 12:00 noon for a half-hour. You may bring your lunch or go grab something nearby. Please be sure you are on time. Individuals arriving late may not be able to work that day if tasks have already been assigned.

Is there a minimum age?

You must be at 18 years old to work on a construction site. 16 and 17 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those under 18 must not use power tools, climb ladders, or work on scaffolding or the roof.

BCHFH's most urgent need is skilled volunteer construction supervisors. Even if you only possess the one talent, e.g. roofing, we need you!
