Broome-Tioga BOCES students are busy building a structure destined to become a home for a local family in need through a new partnership.  Broome-Tioga BOCES students to learn real-world skills by building a Broome County Habitat for Humanity home under the leadership of their teachers and Habitat for Humanity's Core Crew.

BOCES carpentry student Brandon Wood, 17, a junior from Chenango Valley High School, said he's excited to work more with students in other BOCES trade programs to build the house.

"I have some friends that are in other building trades and in masonry, too," Brandon said. "I hope we all can work together."

Wood said he had already worked with students in other trade programs on initial project work to prepare for the first wall to be raised.

Construction of the house, located on BOCES' main campus on Glenwood Road in Binghamton follows months of plans and discussions.  Land was cleared by a BOCES heavy equipment program and a slab of concrete poured as a "teaching site".

The home will be a little more than 1,300 square feet, will have two bathrooms, three bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and dining area.

After it is completed, the house will be transported to land owned by Broome County Habitat for Humanity in the City of Binghamton.

The project should take about two years, so students can start and finish the project as they move through the BOCES program. Overall, the project is expected to cost about $100,000.

The Stuart W. and Wilma C. Hoyt Foundation has given an approximately $87,000 grant to help pay for building materials and the cost of moving the house off of BOCES' campus.
